In case you haven’t noticed by the lack of posts, life is BU-SY.  I know this is not a condition unique to me and I’m not complaining – I actually do better busier.  However, I have been finding myself wanting a little outfit inspo for busy mornings – not a month-long outfit challenge or anything too prescriptive, and though I admire my thrifting-sisterhood-super-stylish friend Adina for her thoughtful and organized approach to wardrobe planning, I am simply not that organized.  (Would you plan my outfits for me, Adina?!!  Pretty please?!!)  As I was purging thousands – yes thousands – of photos on my phone this past weekend (I only had to abandon my family and travel 4 hours East on a holiday weekend to find the time for this unpleasant task), I came across a screen shot I saved of an approach from Who What Wear

I like the idea of having some notion of what I will wear for the coming week but still the freedom to mix and match with the rest of my wardrobe according the weather, my activities for the day or my mood.  I also like the idea of being more intentional about wearing specific pieces – either to rule them out of my closet or gain them admittance until the next closet purge.  And so, on my long drive back from Saskatchewan on Thanksgiving Monday, I decided to give the Core Weekly Wardrobe a try this week!  It is a short week which seemed like a gentler start with only four core pieces:

$3 black velvet dress from Goodwill, Joe fresh brand

$9 navy tunic top, Zara brand from Salvation Army Thrift Store

$4.90 top from Value Village, Miss Me brand

$6 grey skirt WITH POCKETS from Value Village, Zara brand, thrifted for me by my friend Taylor who is now officially a member of the #thriftingsisterhood xoxoxo

Can you see my jammie legs sticking out at the bottom of the shot?  This is real life, ladies.  There was no lengthy deliberation; Tuesday morning, I grabbed the core pieces, snapped the shots and started my race, I mean, week.  I did not premeditate which day I would wear which piece, but here’s how it has gone so far…

Tuesday's ensemble which I meant to be a blog post but then I discovered my freezer quit working and my photo opportunity went up in smoke, or down in meat juice. Ug.

Wednesday's outfit, almost the same as Tuesday's! Oops.

And today I wore the grey skirt and had just enough time to get my favourite 6-year-old to snap a few shots…

Worn with my $2.45 striped top, $3.50 black belt, tights and accessories from my closet.
Over-exposure is her specialty!  😉  Worn with my $2.45 striped top, $3.50 black belt, tights and accessories from my closet.  Though I love my leather sneakers, they were decidedly NOT my first choice for this outfit but I’m still figuring out which shoes I can last the day in without pain.  Substitute in footwear from your imagination, that’s what I did.  Sigh.
The pockets and pleats make this skirt AWESOME!

My photographer insisted on this shot. Luckily I had lipstick on hand, IN MY POCKET! HA!

The stripes up top help to balance out the fullness of the skirt.

As does the scarf which I wore for much of the day. This BTW isn't my room!! Friends don't mind when friends use their giant mirrors for selfies!

And that brings us to Friday when I will be wearing that Miss Me top, as it turns out.  No, I have no idea how I’ll style it tomorrow.  I frankly don’t even know if I’ll have time to wash my hair, but you get that, right?  We’re all in this together, right?  This Core Weekly Wardrobe could work for us, right?  Stay tuned and we shall see!

  1. Grey skirt is a winner, I can imagine it styled in lots of ways (and hurray for pockets), so is the black tunic but the velvet one…hmm, maybe refashion for a Halloween costume?
