People, it’s January 15th. ONLY. Sigh. That’s exactly why I’m doing Black Out Style – I need something to pump me up, add some colour, keep me going for the other half of the month! I know what I reach for over and over again during Black Out Style and thought it was time to showcase what I consider to be the 7 Essential Pieces of a Colourful Wardrobe. There are plenty of similar recommendations for a classic wardrobe; but what about those of us who are less classic and more Elisa Nalin?!! Over the next couple weeks, I’ll unveil the essentials and hopefully offer some guidance to those of you looking to add more colour to your wardrobe, and if that happens to inspire some thrifting, so be it. 😉
The first 100% absolutely fundamentally essential piece of a colourful wardrobe is…

My obsession with mustard cardis started a long long time ago in a Value Village not-so-far-away on the very first Fashion’s Night Out! That night, my thrifty therapist friend Randa wore her mustard cardi and it looked amazing with absolutely everything. By the end of the evening, we all determined we *needed* one, stat.

I spent the next several months scouring the racks for the perfect mustard cardi and did not find one until almost a year later!
This mustard cardi is a little more French’s than Dijon, but still has served me well and the cost per wear is pennies! I’ve actually gathered a few mustard options…

And I had a boyfriend/Grandpa style mustard cardi B.T. (Before Thrifting)…
Before you go saying “Mustard doesn’t look good on me, I can’t wear yellow blah blah blah.”, let me say, “Be quiet I’m right TRY IT.” Search mustard cardi on Pinterest. And for the love of God, if you find one in your size at the thrift store, snatch it up!

My mustard and navy outfit isn’t too wild and crazy but the point is that no matter what you throw it on with, the mustard cardi will look good. It takes the guess-work out of the colourful wardrobe.

Love the mustard cardi!
Is this partly due to my lack of cobalt?!? U0001f61cU0001f499
