Back in November, I announced a new project for 2018!  I picked up the “Houston’s Finest Thrift & Consignment Stores” calendar at the Assistance League Thrift Shop, and I plan to visit each thrift store of the month sometime during that month! And you’re invited!

January’s featured thrift shop is MAM (Memorial Assistance Minisitries) Resale Shop

MAM Resale Shop is HUGE with everything from fabric to books to furniture to clothing for men, women and children!

There is even a well-stocked boutique section with designer pieces at a great price!

Sale rack in the boutique!

Like most non-profit thrift stores, MAM Resale Shop is staffed largely by volunteers.  We encountered one volunteer who said her years of volunteering have been the best of her life!  That’s quite an endorsement!  Apparently MAM Resale is second in Houston for generating proceeds to support community endeavours.  MAM helps “nearly 5,000 local families each year to stay in their homes, stay healthy, and learn skills to become more independent.”

This is what I’m getting at when I say shopping can support your community.  If you’re going to shop anyway, make wise decisions to make the most of your consumer power.  That is all.

My sister Shannon and I about to hit the aisles! We met up with my Houston big sis thrifter, Mary!
First stop: SHOES GLORIOUS SHOES!!
Spotted heels like this vintage pair in the windows of Salvatore Ferragamo at the Galleria where I wandered around looking at things that cost more than my van wondering how anyone can justify spending so much on clothing.
LOVED them but not exactly what this Texas Trophy Wife needs at this stage in my life.
Nor do I need another pair of black leather boots in Houston even when they fit my puny calves.
There were tons of great brands in great condition!

Some stepsister moments with Stuart Weitzman…
insert sad face emoji
But each of us found at least one pair of fab shoes to take home! My sis found these perfect booties!
My Houston sis found perfect leather boots!
I found leather lilac t-strap Bernardo shoes for who cares because they’re so adorable ($9).  I should apparently use my savings for a pedi.
AND I found a pair of new-condition Natural Soul sneakers for $10 so now I can be like the cool fashion bloggers wearing sneakers with dresses.

With some shoes in our carts, we hit the clothing racks!  There was a huge selection sorted by colour, with some racks designated for plus sizes and specific brands (Chicos, White House Black Market)…

$10 Elie Tahari jacket that didn’t fit any of us. WAH
Such a pretty unique silk blouse – that’s what I looovvee about thrifting! But ultimately I left this behind since it doesn’t fit my current lifestyle.
Dress racks make me happy.
Vintage pieces are so fun.
Not all stripes are created equal. This one made me look (and act) like Hamburglar.
I found a couple Anthro pieces including this $6 Hei Hei pink elephant top that just so happened to match my pink elephant earrings. #winning
Apologies for the blurry selfie but I also scored this Meadow Rue linen tank for $3.
I WANT to jump on the polka dot trend but this dress had a polyester lining so it stayed in the store because Houston is hot and humid except for these few weeks of “winter.”
I did get this CK green dress for $8 for some easy breezy Houston style.
And I scored a new Life is Good tee for some graphic tee outfits and morning walks (I will wear bottoms in future, I promise).

All in all, it was a fruitful and fun thrift stop!  MAM Resale Shop has regular sales AND today, Saturday January 27, 2018, they are having a 50% sale in the entire store.  SO GO.  Drop everything and go.

My thrifting sisters and I wish you good thrifting luck!

Stay tuned for February’s featured thrift shop and excursion!  I will announce where I’m going and when via Instagram and Facebook and would love to meet more of the Houston thrifting community!  Happy Thrifting!

  1. Wow! A great store and some terrific finds. Our thrift stores in BC sure don’t have stuff like that, but we’re in California for a week next month, so maybe there ….

It’s always fun to do some road trip thrifting! I think it’s more about the frequency of the visits increasing one’s odds! 😉 I’ve had good luck in Kelowna!

My pleasure! Thank YOU for all you do! My sister and I came back to MAM on Wednesday and had another fruitful visit! The store has such a wonderful culture – everyone is happy and patient… That is remarkable! So many stores and businesses ought to take notes from MAM! MAM will be a regular stop for me and anyone who visits me! xoxoxo

  3. What a cool, fun trip you had, and that looks like a great store! I think your project idea is so cool, I might try it here in the Tampa area! Nice scores!

Thanks! Great idea! I was lucky to find that calendar which was being sold a fundraiser. I wonder if there’s something similar in your area. Even if not, it would be easy enough to pick a store each month from Yelp and check it out! Would love to see what you find!
