I inadvertently wore an easy outfit fashion formula today… (er, I guess that’s what happens with easy outfits). In case you haven’t heard the term before, a “fashion formula” is a tried and true combination of pieces that results in an outfit that looks great, thereby requiring less time to make decisions and get dressed in the morning. Which is something I need now that I have to get up go to work get my kids ready for school feed the dog feed the cat a busier morning. My easy fashion formula was:
Striped top + Skirt + Statement necklace
I could have worn any shoes with this formula and neutral palette and they would have coordinated. I chose my $9.10 Frye flats because I have to work 14 miles to my office while they’re paving our regular parking area.
I could have chosen any striped top – even a different neutral, like navy – and it would have worked. In fact, it might have been a little more interesting, but today I was feeling matchy-matchy so I went with my basic black and white $1.50 Nicole Miller tee.
Since stripes are the default for print-mixing, I could have chosen any skirt and it would have worked. I liked the sheer pleated and polka dot pattern in the skirt for more subtle print-mixing and the flattering waistband of this gifted but thrifted skirt. (blurriness due to new camera and first day of school rush; mea culpa)
I could have chosen any statement necklace for this outfit – some colour would have been nice, or even a bunch of layered necklaces… any kind of statement! I just wanted to give my new $5 silver statement necklace an outing!
Easy peasy lemon squeezy. (I’m back to my preschool vernacular now that I’m back to work.)
You TOO can replicate this fashion formula! Striped top + skirt + statement necklace. Try it, I dare you!
