I’m past the halfway point of the April 10-Item Wardrobe Challenge and still feeling inspired!  BUT I am putting more thought into my accessories – shoes, jewelry, scarves – rather than letting “new” pieces add the interest to my outfits.  You may think Spring doesn’t require a scarf and if so, when do you want me to move in with you?  Spring in Canada involves scarves.  Maybe not the blanket scarves from the heart of winter, but a scarf functions as a light layer – for warmth and/or decoration, or even outerwear in pinch!  By the power vested in me*, I hereby declare the following to be the 6 essential scarves for a stylish Spring!

*I have no power.

I'm going ahead and dubbing these the "Spring Six."
The “Spring Six.”

#1 – striped scarf

This jersey scarf is my most recent fave! It is surprisingly cozy - like a non-wool version of a blanket scarf! Thrifted for $2.80!!

As with any striped piece, a striped scarf can be mixed with any colour or print and it helps draw the eye away from awkward facial expressions.

#2 – floral scarf

This is my beloved Anthropologie floral infinity scarf, purchased as part of my Splurge shopping!

Even though I didn’t thrift this scarf, don’t get the wrong idea!  You CAN find countless floral-print scarves at thrift shops.  I guarantee it will be hard to stop at one…

#3 – solid neutral scarf

I got this pashmina-style scarf at a consignment shop for $8 which is relatively high compared to thrifting.

Sure you *can* go for black for your solid neutral but I bet black got plenty of air time over the winter!!!  Black can step back and let another neutral have a turn!

#4 – solid colourful scarf

Red is a hot colour for Spring and this scarf is lightweight yet warm enough to wear as an outer layer.

I LOVE watching all the scarf-tying tutorials!! LOVE love love.  However, I tie my scarves the same most of the time and you know what?  That’s okay.  Scarves are about function first and fashion second in the real-life style realm where I dwell.  Ask any nursing mother, any mom who forgot a picnic blanket, any mom watching soccer again on a chilly spring evening – they’ll all assure you that having a scarf is better than nothing and no one gives a hoot how you tie it.

#5 – springy print scarf

This is my spring version of a mustard scarf therefore it looks good with everything.

The standard shape of most scarves lends itself to the possibility of tying it in a variety of ways, but you could certainly choose a square or triangle shape for one of your essential scarves.  I *may* have several square scarves as well!

#6 – signature scarf

This is my signature scarf! I got it last summer while on vacation in San Francisco.
I got this pretty bird-print scarf last summer while on vacation in San Francisco.

This is my signature scarf because a) no one else from around these parts has it, and b)I have received tons of compliments on it – it is unique!  Thrifting is a great way to find a signature scarf because it is more likely that no one else will have the same one, you can find unique prints AND most scarves run between $2 – $6!

Here’s a recap of the 6 essential Spring scarves (so you can screen shot this and take it with you thrifting!):

  1. striped scarf
  2. floral scarf
  3. solid neutral scarf
  4. solid colourful scarf
  5. springy print scarf
  6. signature scarf

Now, I am by no means suggesting you have only one of each…

I use an Ikea rod to store my scarves right across from my front hall closet.

I’m suggesting you have at least one of each!  Now, go forth and thrift yourselves some scarves!
