Mixology May is drawing to a close and I’ve already concluded that I’m nowhere near done talking about spirits (of the liquid sort).  Style, socializing and spirits were meant to be together so I plan to continue posting my “spirited” adventures and recipes whenever the, er, Spirit moves me.  Meanwhile, I would be remiss not to mention wine this month since it’s my favourite of all.  Pretty broad for a favourite, I know!!  I always mean to learn more about wines… if only I could remember all the smart-sounding sommelier details!  In reality, I’m usually exhausted and just happy to have an affordable twist-off.  She sheepishly admitted.  I like pricey award-winning 90-point+ wines too but for every day, I have a few faves.  Don’t read on if you’re going to judge me!  This is an everyday-woman style blog and you’re about to get some everyday-woman wine recommendations.  Then I’m going to show you an everyday-woman label that you MUST scoop up whenever you see it in a thrift store.  Just trust me.

Copper Moon Malbec, Naked Grape Shiraz and
Copper Moon Malbec, Naked Grape Shiraz and Big Bold Red Revolution

I used to always get a Cab Sav and still do depending on what’s on sale, but lately I’ve been liking other varieties.  I should clarify that these were my faves for that particular wine pit stop – there are others, many many others, but these happened to be the ones that I haven’t drunk yet. Insert big smiley.  Copper Moon Malbec is like an underdog hero, sitting there all passed-over but very good for the price point under $10.  Not all Copper Moons are the same; get the Malbec.  Trust me.  As for Naked Grape, there are several varieties but one day the nice sample-lady at the Sobey’s Liquor Store told me her favourite Naked Grape was Shiraz and I haven’t looked back since.  The other red I grabbed was Big Bold Revolution Red, on sale for $7.50!  It’s been a while since I had it but I’d buy it for the name alone.  Drink, think big, think revolution.  Works for me.

Layer Cake Angelfood Cake, Moscato and Sweet Red
Layer Cake Angel Food Cake, Barefoot Moscato and Sweet Red

I buy my wines in groups of 6.  Doesn’t everyone?  No?  Oh.  Well, at Sobey’s Liquor Store, you get a 10% discount when you buy 6 or more bottles – I’m very economical – however, my Sobey’s doesn’t have Angel Food Layer Cake White, so this particular 6-pack is from another local store, Hilltop Liquor, which is within walking distance from my kids’ school, the Public Health Center and right across the street from St. Vital Church, the big church that Beaumont is known for.  It’s conveniently on my way home from everywhere!  The Angel Food Layer Cake white is one of the few wines that I can really really taste the undertones, the CAKE undertones.  YUM.  I love it.  I also love pretty much all Moscato wines.  I used to think that if I liked sweet wines that meant I wasn’t sophisticated; now I don’t give a hoot.  A nice cool Moscato on a nice summer day is lovely, and Barefoot makes a pink and red Moscato that, again, you can’t find everywhere, so I scooped it up from Hilltop when I spotted it.  Same goes for the Barefoot Sweet Red.  I first tried it last summer while camping at the Tajmawalmart and haven’t found it again, till now!  It is sweet, so tastes fine on its own or maybe paired with spicy foods or Ripple chips, my personal favourite pairing.  If you ever spot these wines, grab them!  I’m too lazy to go find my receipt, but the wines ranged from $7.50 to $15 for the Angel Food Cake, and my bill was under $60 for the 6 bottles.

How about you?  What’s YOUR favourite cheap wine?  Do share in the comments, it’s a public service – empowering your community!  Now onto one of my favourite labels – Oxmo.

Oxmo is a boutique brand.

Oxmo is a boutique label found at C’est Sera and other boutiques.  I got my first Oxmo pieces years ago from C’est Sera – a black tank, black cardi and black leggings.  I finally had to let the leggings go after wearing them out, it was a sad day.  Oxmo isn’t super pricey but not fast-fashion cheap either; the black tank below was $40 which seems like A LOT but the cost-per-wear is pennies by now.  So when I saw an Oxmo dress at Goodwill, I snatched it up!

If you ever spot an Oxmo piece in your size at a thrift store, grab it!  If you ever spot an Oxmo piece in my size, Tweet me!  My Oxmo dress cost less than the cheapest bottle of wine I shared!!  Surprised?  Don’t be, thrifting is another way to balance the budget… less money for clothes, more money for wine!  Win win!
