Going back to work is hard.  Going back to work is harder if you had an extra 6 weeks off, even if it was for surgery…  And so I find myself a little out of habit of dressing like a grown-up a professional.  To ease the transition, I bought some “work pajama” pants earlier this summer from Plato’s Closet Strathcona and gave them a go earlier this week.

New with tags black draw-string pants, also free at Plato's! My daughter said, they look like pajama pants. Exactly, Dear, exactly.

Styling casual pants like these for work is easier if you keep in mind the basic styling principle of mixing casual with fancy pieces

DON'T mix casual pants with a casual tee and casual sneakers and go to work. Even in my relaxed work environment, this look would cross the line!

DO wear a fancy top. And by fancy, I mean something like this blouse that I scored for $3. The hemline and sleeves are nice details that add some fancy. Fancy for YOU might mean sequins - there's a whole spectrum of fancy!

(Please excuse the photo quality – unbeknownst to me, the lens was foggy and it was spitting out.  That child photographer should have said something!!  It’s hard to find good help these days!!)  Fancy for YOU might mean sequins – there’s a whole spectrum of fancy!  DO wear fancy shoes like my leather sneakers which I chose mostly because they were the only option I could squeeze my swollen foot into.  (Insert sad face.)  Some coloured flats would have been ideal.
DO accessorize just to make it clear that you are NOT getting ready for bed. This necklace was one of my inaugural thrifting purchases for $2!

My matchy-matchy arm party game was strong that day.

DO wear a blazer as a finishing layer rather than a cardi or nothing at all. You don't have to be all serious and formal with your blazer choice, but the structure will balance out the lack thereof in the pants.

The only reason I can even entertain work pajamas is because I work in preschool in a business-heavy-on-the-casual environment.  People wear jeans and yoga pants on a daily basis!  But that does NOT mean that one need stoop to the lowest common denominator!  One must maintain one’s fancy-casual balance, which is all the more easy to do when your “fancy” pieces cost less than lunch! workpajamaoutfit

What about you?  Would YOU wear work pajamas?!
